- [Airline Memories #6: Happy Holidays from Eastern and Continental](https://grayflannelsuit.net/airline-memories-6-happy-holidays-from-eastern-and-continental): This 1980s Christmas card has twice the Yuletide joy as it’s from not one but two airlines — Eastern and Continental. I don’t have a good image of the interior but it reads: “May the bells ring out for you a Joyous Holiday.” It’s jointly from the Eastern and Continental sales staffs so I’m guessing this was printed in or around 1987. That’s the year the two carriers created the OnePass frequent flyer program.

To conserve on electricity the tree will be lighted daily between 4p.m. and 8 p.m. only. That station was independent for three decades (the Metromedia era) until it was purchased by the new Fox network in 1985.

- [Comic Book Rack #4: Hi-School Romance, March 1954](https://grayflannelsuit.net/comic-book-rack-4-hi-school-romance-march-1954): Here’s a mid-century gem from Harvey Comics: It’s issue #26 of Hi-School Romance, publication date March 1954. One of the common tropes I’ve noticed from these romance comics is that the kid with the bow tie always seems to be choice #2 for the heartbroken girl. Well, not Eddie Fisher, but the other kids. This cover, with art by Julius La Rosa, comes from the “Rage of Night” story. The others stories are just as delightfully named — “Trapped by Desire,” “Tempted!” and “I Lied to My Love.” So scandalous! So steamy!

- [Beautiful Billboards #4: Mountain Dew and the St. Louis Cardinals, 1965](https://grayflannelsuit.net/beautiful-billboards-4-mountain-dew-and-the-st-louis-cardinals-1965): We have a special twofer in this edition of Beautiful Billboards. This great slide from 1965 features ads for Mountain Dew and baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals on KMOX-AM, which would seemingly place it somewhere in Missouri. Fans of old advertisements will of course note that this Mountain Dew was from well before their hip, extreme rebranding toward the end of the 20th century. In the ’60s they were still playing up their image as being associated with hillbilly culture. KMOX, meantime, is still the flagship station for the Cardinals and has been — with some interruptions — since 1928.

- [Brochure Beauties #9: RCA Victor's Popular Records for January 1947](https://grayflannelsuit.net/brochure-beauties-9-rca-victors-popular-records-for-january-1947): You kids with your YouTube and streaming services have it so good. Back in 1947 the main way to listen to recorded music at home was rather brittle shellac 78 rpm records. One of the leading brands in that market was RCA Victor, who issued this brochure highlighting some of the most popular songs and artists at the beginning of 1947. This brochure features songs from the likes of Desi Arnaz, Perry Como, Betty Hutton, Tex Beneke, Herbie Fields, and Spike Jones. Here’s one of those tunes, “Tia Juana” by Desi Arnaz and His Orchestra.

It’s the 1972 rock classic School’s Out (Warner Bros. Records ‎– BS 2623), and boy does this one have a lot. The original album cover (designed by Craig Braun) was designed to look like a wooden school desk complete with etchings by members of the band. The desk opened to reveal the vinyl. - [Car Crazy #6: 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Coupé](https://grayflannelsuit.net/car-crazy-6-1977-lincoln-continental-town-coupe): Soft lighting, feathered hair, and a giant automobile that would never fit in your garage. It must be the 1970s! 1977 to be precise, in the form of a dealer postcard for the 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Coupé. This was one of two full-size Lincolns for the 19777 model year, the other being the fabled Town Car. This particular car was also used in one of the company’s sales brochure, so if I’m not mistaken this gorgeous paint color was called “cinnamon gold moondust.” Outstanding.

- [Album Cover of the Week: Arthur Lyman on Broadway](https://grayflannelsuit.net/album-cover-week-arthur-lyman-broadway): Folks, this one has it all. Matching outfits, leis, pants up to the belly button, at least three tubes of Brylcreem, a vibraphone (or is it a marimba?), and state of the art photo editing. It’s Arthur Lyman on Broadway! This gem of an LP was released in 1959 on the HiFi Records label. Lyman, who made his name with music that could roughly be called Polynesian, explored the world of show tunes here. There are four cuts on the album — “The King and I,” “My Fair Lady,” Porgy and Bess,” and “South Pacific.”

There’s no date printed on the reels or the booklet but the latter mentions the Berlin Wall, which was built in 1961.
